Story of Christine & Adriel, Mother and Son: Two Hearts, One Journey.

In the heart of Uganda, a story of resilience, love, and hope unfolds in our new ThisWorld original film, “Story of Christine & Adriel, Mother and Son: Two Hearts, One Journey.” This warm hearted documentary brings to light the incredible journey of Christine, a dedicated mother, and her special needs son, Adriel, as they navigate the challenges of autism in a society that often overlooks the needs of children with disabilities. Through the unwavering support of the Kyaninga Inclusive Model School (KIMS) and the Kyaninga Child Development Centre (KCDC), Christine and Adriel find hope, help, and a community that embraces them.

No Boundaries For a Mother’s Love

Christine is a resilient and loving mother living in Uganda. Her life took an unexpected turn when her son, Adriel, was diagnosed with autism. The challenges that came with raising a child with special needs in Uganda were immense, but Christine’s endless love and determination have been the cornerstone of their journey. The turning point came when she discovered KIMS, a place that would transform their lives and provide the support they desperately needed.

Adriel is Christine’s beloved son, a child with a radiant smile and an adventurous spirit. Diagnosed with autism, Adriel’s condition presented numerous challenges, both for him and his family, in a country where resources for children with disabilities are scarce.

Raising Adriel has not been easy. The family faced significant conflicts and societal stigma due to Adriel’s autism. Many in their community did not understand Adriel’s condition, leading to isolation and hardship for the family. After Adriel’s diagnosis, Christine struggled to find the necessary support and resources to help her son thrive.

The Turning Point: Discovering KIMS and KCDC

Everything changed for Christine and Adriel when they encountered the Kyaninga Child Development Centre (KCDC). KCDC is an organization dedicated to providing children with disabilities the support and resources they need to reach their full potential. Founded with a vision to create a world where children with disabilities are valued and included, KCDC has been a source of hope for many families in Uganda.

Meeting KCDC was life-changing for Christine. She found a community of understanding and support, which led her to Kyaninga Inclusive Model School (KIMS). KIMS, born from the vision to provide inclusive education, offers specialized programs and therapies tailored to the needs of children with disabilities.

The Broader Picture: Disabilities in Uganda

In Uganda, an estimated 2.5 million people live with disabilities, many of whom are children. The societal stigma and lack of resources make life incredibly challenging for these families. Schools like KIMS and organizations like KCDC are crucial in providing the much-needed support and advocating for inclusivity and understanding.

“Story of Christine & Adriel, Mother and Son: Two Hearts, One Journey” is a testament to the power of love and the impact of community support. Through KIMS and KCDC, Christine and Adriel have found a path to a brighter future, inspiring countless others along the way. This film is not just a story; it is a call to action to support inclusive education and embrace the potential of every child.

We want to send our deepest thanks to Christine & Adriel for sharing their remarkable story and showing us that there is always hope when one is seeking it. Our deepest gratitude goes also to all the extraordinary people in KIMS and KCDC and their work towards a better tomorrow for children in Uganda – thank you for your work and sharing your passion with us. Finally we want to thank our filmmakers Simon Felber and Beatricé Vu for making this film come alive and taking us all on a journey to Uganda.
