Soul of Kazakhstan

rrThis is Kazakhstan, a land of diverse landscapes, rich traditions, and vibrant culture. In our latest documentary film, we invite you to explore the hidden gems and timeless wonders of this captivating country, brought to life by the talented filmmaker and editor, Alen Tkalčec.

What to expect from our Kazakhstan film

Almaty – Cultural Hub of Kazakhstan

Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city and former capital, serves as a vibrant center of culture and commerce. From its bustling markets filled with traditional handicrafts to its modern skyline dominated by the towering Ascension Cathedral, Almaty surprised us with forest-like atmosphere and filled us with love from the locals.

Traditional Dombra Melodies

The dombra is a traditional Central Asian musical instrument with a long neck and a round body covered with animal skin. It typically has two strings and is plucked or strummed. It’s often associated with folk music and has been an integral part of the cultural heritage of the region for centuries. We were honored to meet both the crafters and the artists playing dombra. In our film, you’ll get to experience beautiful sounds from dombra, played by Aidadau and Zamira.

Natural Wonders – Kaindy Lake, Kolsay Lakes, and Charyn Canyon

Nature lovers will be captivated by Kazakhstan’s diverse landscapes, which range from snow-capped mountains to arid deserts. Kaindy Lake, known for its submerged forest and crystal-clear waters, offers a serene escape amidst the rugged terrain of the Tian Shan Mountains. Nearby, the Kolsay Lakes beckon with their tranquil beauty, while the dramatic rock formations of Charyn Canyon provide a striking contrast to the surrounding steppe.

Preserving traditions with the locals

We also met with Kundyz, a local horse enthusiast who aspires to keep the Kazakh tradition alive and inspire young girls to do the same. Wheter it is archery, sword fighting or horseback riding, Kazakhs excel in it. Kundyz is also one of those people we love to call adrenaline junkies – you can feel her bright spirit through the screen!

Preserving Heritage – Turkistan and Sauran

Kazakhstan’s rich history is reflected in its ancient cities and archaeological sites. Turkistan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, a revered Sufi saint, and serves as a pilgrimage destination for Muslims from around the world. Nearby, the ruins of Sauran offer a glimpse into the region’s medieval past, with remnants of its once-flourishing Silk Road trading post still visible amidst the desert landscape.

Astana – Modern Marvels and Architectural Wonders

In contrast to its ancient cities, Astana stands as a testament to Kazakhstan’s modern ambitions. Renamed Nur-Sultan in 2019, the capital city is a showcase of contemporary architecture and urban planning, with landmarks such as the Bayterek Tower and the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation symbolizing the country’s aspirations for the future.

As we reflect on the diverse landscapes, rich heritage, and vibrant culture of Kazakhstan, we extend our gratitude to Alen Tkalčec for his masterful portrayal of this captivating country. Through his lens, we have gained a deeper appreciation for the hidden treasures that await discovery in Kazakhstan, inviting us to embark on our own journey of exploration and adventure.
